'Net Know-How?
The Internet is a powerful search tool--
it is a big world here and search engines will help you find out what you want to
know. There is even one here on the Parkdale site.
Let's pick a specific animal to look for. How about Fish? To find
websites on Fish you can search, starting with a broad or general subject, then narrow it
as you go: Start by typing in fish in the search box on our Sitemap & Search page (after all, Fish are interesting,
right?). You should get results.
Since our site is more about our school and the people in it, why not
try typing in your first name (what could be more interesting than finding yourself
on the web)? Type in your best friend's name. How are you doing?
For more general stuff go to a general or kids search engine.
There are many types --you'll find which are best for your needs. See Jeeves, for
example, in our list below. You'll find a whole world of information at your fingertips!
The web is full of many pages made many people. You'll want to
understand why you have reached a web site in your search. Web sites that look factual may
in fact be joking (satirical), unintentionally false, or even deceptive. Not everything
you see is true. Some sites are better than others, and sometimes there simply isn't
enough information to determine if a site is factual or not. A good idea (at any age) is
to avoid sites with "pop-up" advertising: they are mostly wanting to sell
something rather than to provide unbiased (honest) information.
Starting out, you will want to research sites that are designed for
someone your age. Words should be easy to understand; so here are some of our some of our
favorite sites for starting out on the 'net:
